Way long overdue post about San Francisco trip-ness. "Trip-ness" really should be a word. Because I'm sure it would make life more fun. Or something.

Anyhow, it was a great trip. Hubby and I did a lot of driving to and fro -- something we tend to do a lot on vacation. What can I say? We are driving people. I didn't go sightseeing around San Francisco as much as I thought I would. Based on our last trip there, I expected to go out and look around and take pictures while hubby was in meetings. But we stayed in a different hotel, which was pretty far from all the "action" sorts of places. It worked out OK, though, as it gave me some much-needed down time. I read a lot and watched anime and, overall, was a lazy bum. Oh, and I finished up the new prologue and got chapter 1 nearly edited during this trip, too. Love that.

We drove along Highway 1 from San Francisco all the way down to Santa Cruz. This was on the first day -- after leaving the house at 0:dark-thirty for our flight. And an extended flight to CA (6 hours instead of 5 ... Yikes!). We intended to drive all the way down to Carmel. I love Carmel and was really looking forward to that drive. We made it as far as Santa Cruz, realized we still had a good two or so hours of driving till we reached Carmel -- not to mention having to drive all the way back to San Francisco -- and decided we were too beat to go any farther. But we did get to eat at a really fantastic diner in Santa Cruz, called The Santa Cruz Diner. Imagine that!

We did manage to do the obligatory (for me, because I adore it) drive down Lombard Street. Last time we visited San Francisco, I swear we drove down Lombard at least five or six times. I was like a little kid on a carnival ride or something. This time, the city and Lombard were both much more crowded with tourists, so we only drove down once. Still, loved it!! We also saw the Painted Ladies, which is something we hadn't done the last time we were in the city. We went to Ferry Market, which was crowded and jam-packed with fascinating and fun things to look at and buy. I mostly looked, since most of the things I wanted were either too expensive or too hard to ship home. I found these dogs, though, made out of recycled newspapers. I sooo wanted one of them. I almost broke down and purchased one, but I figured it would be a nightmare trying to send it back home. So, regretfully, I only snapped a picture of them. And we also went to Twin Peaks with hubby's cousin -- after dining at this German restaurant that was TO DIE FOR. Seriously -- best food I've had in a long, long time. Twin Peaks was fabulous. It was chilly and windy -- just the way I like my weather. It was a little too foggy to see all the way to the ocean, but we still had a great view of the city. I didn't have my camera with me that day, though, as it had been misting rain all day.

We drove out to Napa and Sonoma, taking a nice look at the wine country as we went. We didn't stop off as much along the way as we did last time. It was kind of late by the time we got out there, so most of the wineries were already closing down for the day. Mostly, I just wanted to see the country side, anyhow. That was fun, and a beautiful drive. We stopped off for quite a while in Sausalito. This was my first time visiting that town, and I absolutely fell in love with it right from the get-go. It's so stacked up on itself, with houses just tumbling down the wooded hills and beautiful views of the ocean. I want to live there -- just as soon as I win the lottery or something! It is a very charming and cute town. We found an incredible toy store that had a TON of Totoro stuff. TOTORO!! I was in anime heaven. I love Totoro.

After doing the wine country, we drove back through Berkeley. We didn't do much there, other than eat at a local, college-sort of hangout. Watching all those college kids made me feel really old. *whimpers*

And I guess that's about it. The trip in a nutshell. I actually took notes this time, thinking I would make a super-detailed trip post when I got back. But they ended up being all about where we ate. So ... yeah. We drove a lot and ate a lot. *nervous laugh*

And here are some pictures!! (Not of us eating, thankfully ... but of other things.)

Tex's 2010 San Francisco Pics

I have other pictures to post -- some from Williamsburg and some from our latest jaunt out to Leesburg and Hillsboro. But I'll do them later, in a separate post. I was running way behind on fixing up pictures, so I spent the last two days doing just that. Argh!

Hee! Let's see ...

We did a lot of driving, so we ate a lot outside of San Francisco. I'm not sure how far you guys are planning on straying from the city, so some of this might not be helpful. But I did write down almost all the restaurant names.

Shiki Bistro, in San Carlos. It was Japanese-ish. And yum!
Santa Cruz Diner, in Santa Cruz.

Piccolo Teatro, in Sausalito
Smart Alec's, in Berkeley

In San Francisco:
This little Italian restuarant. I didn't write the name of it down, but it is in the Nob Hill area. It's teeny tiny, but it was fantastic.
Ferry Market: lots of restaurants here. We ate at a Japanese-style deli, which had great miso soup.
Suppekutche: This is the German place. It is so, so, so, sooooo good. Seriously. If I had to pick one restaurant to bring back to VA with me, this would be it. YUM. It opens at 5 PM, and, by 5:03, the place was packed.
Bi-Rite Creamery -- for ice cream, of course. This was probably the best ice cream I've ever had: toasted coconut and cinnamon with snickerdoodle.

*sigh* I'm hungry just thinking about it. Off to get some breakfast!! Hee!

Gorgeous pics! It's been a while since I've just played tourist in SF (2002, I think) and I forget what a wonderful city it is.

Thanks!! San Francisco is so wonderful, isn't it? Although it's so crowded -- and I don't think I could ever drive there. We rented a car, and I about had a heart attack several times. (Hubby did all the driving, and he handled it well. I know I would have been a nervous wreck.) Even so, I would love to live there. If I could afford it. >.O
