I love taking pictures! I don't post very many online because I'm shy -- although I used to post on DA before I decided to streamline my internet life a bit and basically ditched that site. Every now and again, I'll work up the courage to post some here on LJ. I should probably make myself do it more often, just to combat my shyness a little bit. I don't consider myself technically proficient. I know photographers (amateurs like me) who know all about the f-stop and aperture size, yadda, yadda, yadda. I've always felt really insecure around them because I don't know anything about that stuff. I don't use different lenses -- in fact, I'm so lazy that I pretty much shoot only with my "big" zoom lens. I don't use a tripod or any other kind of equipment, which means I sometimes lose shots. But I prefer a more journalistic style of shooting. It's what works for me, I guess. I've never taken a course in photography. I just picked up a camera one day and decided to shoot. (I know, it sounds weird, but I'm often a bit flaky about things like this.) Mainly, this was during a time when I was having trouble with my life, and, in particular, with finding an outlet for my creative energy. I went through a difficult time where I did not (and basically could not) write for about 7 years, believe it or not. So, at that time, the photography was my creative outlet. Now that I write, I don't shoot nearly as much. I don't have as much of an urge to do it -- or as much time as I used to. I don't consider myself a particularly good photographer, either, but I do feel like I have the ability to capture things I see in the world -- that I can manage to put together a picture that I'll enjoy looking at later on. And that's pretty much my goal.
When I still lived in Texas, I had a very good friend who also liked to shoot. We worked a 4-day workweek, so we had Fridays off. We would often get together really early in the morning and then travel all over San Antonio (where we lived at the time) and many of the surrounding, smaller towns on mini photo expeditions. There is something magical about seeing a place through a camera lens. I had lived in and around San Antonio for many, many years, but I never felt I truly knew the city until I started shooting photos. Ditto with the surrounding hill country.
My very secret dream, though, is to be an amazing photographer and work for National Geographic so that I can travel the world and shoot all kinds of exotic locations. Buuuut, since that's never going to work out, I guess I'll tell myself to be happy with what I have here at home. ^.~
Geckos:
Ha! This made me laugh. I am so NOT a "reptile" person. I pretty much don't like reptiles at all. Like, turtles are OK and some kinds of lizards -- geckos being one of them. My RS gallery (and, actually, I guess my main website, too, come to think of it) have the word "Gecko" in their titles/names. But it's not because I like geckos all that much. It's more because I really like the word "gecko". It makes me smile. And it goes well with the word "blue", which is my favorite color. I know ... very shallow. >.O
Austin:
When I die, they can bury me face-down, just so long as they do it in Austin. There are a lot of places in the world I love. I love where I live now. I love Canada. I loved England. I love Louisiana. I love Savannah. Etc ...
But -- there's only one place that really and truly sits in my soul, and that is Austin, Texas. It's a weird city, caught between cowtown and metrotown. Where people wear cowboy boots, Stetson hats, and spurs with their business suits and it's OK. Where you can hear just about any language you care to ... listen to any opinion you want to (and many you would prefer not to hear!) ... and eat pretty much any food your heart desires. And the BEST Tex-Mex anywhere. Anywhere. It has music and flash and sincerity and glitter and soul to go along with the overcrowding and traffic problems and impending doom that will come when the town, inevitably, runs out of water. It has SxSW. It has Hippy Hollow. It has the Oasis (or at least, it used to ... I guess they rebuilt after the fire), which is the absolute best place to go and sit and watch the sun sink into the lake at the end of the day. I can't even describe the feeling of peace and stillness that happens when you're sitting there, surrounded by the buzz of a hundred or more different conversations, and the sun begins to sink toward the horizon. Everyone stops talking or speaks only in muted, hushed tones until it finally descends all the way. And then, everyone claps. Another day down. Another day survived. And that's good enuff.
Holidays (because you write fics with themes):
The themed fic is weird, isn't it? I have this fascination with holidays. Christmas, especially. I think it's because I had a fairly good and uneventful childhood, and that leads you to expect certain things. Like holiday (and, in particular, Christmas) perfection. But things are never "perfect". It's not possible. So I spent most of my childhood trying to figure out exactly why Christmas always fell a bit short. Only to realize, once I had grown up a lot, that each Christmas was perfect in its own way -- not because of expectations or anything like that. But because of the people around me. And the way I felt about them. It's sappy and sentimental, but I always get that way around Christmas time. Which is probably why it comes out in fanfiction. (Too bad I tend to subject the Weiss boys to Christmas "joy". They do seem to be poor candidates for it, don't they? Of course, that's part of what makes it so much fun -- to me. lolz)
Fancels:
I guess this kind of lines up with my love/fascination with reversed painting. And, kind of, my fascination with glass, in general. (I love stained glass and always wanted to learn how to do that!) After I had been collecting for a while, I decided to commission some fancels. I commissioned a few from someone who was a friend at the time. That friendship, sadly, fell through. I'm actually still pretty sad about it, a couple of years after the fact. Once that happened, I realized there weren't many people out there actively making fancels. So I decided I would try making my own. I figured it might be fun ... and creating something might be more satisfying than just commissioning it and paying for it. So, I did. My results so far have been pretty ... well, not the greatest. But I'm still learning and, hopefully, improving. It's something I enjoy, so I'll probably keep on practicing. Maybe one day I'll be able to create really lovely fancels. That's my goal, anyhow! =D
(Appreciate this list! I resisted the temptation to add 'bondage' cause of that cel of Aya you have hahahaha)
Oh my ... I appreciate my list! I do! I do! *snuggles "safe" list* =D

Really? I have no idea why, but that makes me happy -- that you would see some of my pics and still want to talk to me. LOLz I hope you can make it to Austin one day! It's a fun place. And pretty, too. (But hot!)
