Into the Light

CHAPTER 1

"Um… I don't know about this, Master. Do you really think it's such a good idea to go in there?" Majic asked, hesitantly.

"What do you mean?" Orphen replied, giving Majic a strange look. "Of course, it's okay to go in there. We need to get across these mountains to find information on whatever the hell it is we need to complete the Sword of Baltanders. Going over is too dangerous, because there's a storm coming. Anyhow, going over would take too long. So, going through this tunnel-pass is our only choice. Frankly, you should be thankful there is a tunnel. I wouldn't think you'd want to haul Cleao's heavy pack over."

Chapter 2

They had been walking silently through the dark tunnel for about twenty minutes when Cleao finally called out, "Are we there yet?"

Majic heard Orphen's soft, humorless chuckle in the darkness behind him, as the young sorcerer replied, in a sarcastic, mocking tone, "I can't believe it took you this long, Cleao. Are you feeling OK?"

"Ha, ha!" Cleao snapped in the same, mocking tone employed by the sorcerer. "You're so funny in the dark, Orphen. Oh, by the way, did I forget to point out that it is DARK in here?" When neither Orphen nor Majic replied, she continued, "How long is it gonna take to get through here, anyhow?"

Chapter 3

The pain coursing through his body was unlike anything else Orphen had ever felt. It was like he was on fire. Morph's tongue felt like hot metal bands wrapped around him, and he could feel it constricting tighter and tighter, cutting off his breath, as the beast laughed and lifted him off the ground and into the air. He could feel his magical power flowing swiftly out of his body, leaving him weak, helpless, and completely at the mercy of this hideous creature. As Morph's tongue tightened its crushing grip on him, the searing pain intensified, and Orphen small, white bursts of light seemed to explode in his mind and in front of his eyes. He could feel darkness creeping in on him, and he desperately fought against it. If he lost consciousness now, he knew his life would be over within minutes.

Chapter 4

Cleao busied herself with making a soft bed for Orphen near the fire, while Majic did his best to clean and bandage their companion's injuries. She desperately wanted to look up from her task and across the fire to check on Majic's progress, but she was afraid of seeing Orphen. She was still reeling from the shock of seeing him when Majic woke her up. She had heard him calling her name, and rolled over out of a sound sleep only to come face to face with a sight that had shaken her to her very soul. At first, she had been overjoyed that Orphen had returned unharmed, and she had jumped to her feet to run across the cavern to them. She had been so worried about him, but, now that he had returned, all she wanted to do was throw her arms around his neck and welcome him back. But, as she had approached her two companions, she could see, even in the dim firelight, that Orphen was shivering and covered in water mixed with blood, and that he had fallen asleep right where he was sitting, too exhausted and weak to even care about where he was. She had never seen Orphen like that, and it had terrified her. She had immediately backed away from them in fear, almost stepping into the fire. Thankfully, Majic had rescued her by sharply telling her to fix a bed for Orphen on the other side of the fire.

Chapter 5

"Cleao, I'm going back to that cavern that I found. You know, the one with all the books. There has to be something in there that can tell me how to help him," Majic said as he rose from his spot by the fire and stretched. He stepped over the small fire to kneel beside Orphen. Majic really didn't know how long they had been here. It was always dark in the tunnel and maze of caverns connected to it, and, without the sun or another way to tell time, he had no way of knowing if they had been here for five minutes or five days. All he knew was that Orphen had been asleep ever since he had returned from fighting Morph, and, to Majic, it seemed like it had been years since his master had been awake. He gently rolled Orphen over from his side onto his back and checked the bandages covering his chest and shoulders. He was relieved to find that the injuries hadn't started bleeding again, and he gently pulled the soft, warm blanket back over Orphen's body.

Into the Light

Chapter 6

Majic squinted as they finally emerged into the sunlight. Like a man just freed from a lifetime of captivity, he stood at the exit, arms outstretched and his face turned upward toward the sun's healing light. He felt like they had been inside the dark tunnel for years, and, in the back of his mind, Majic had begun to feel that they would never leave that dark prison. But, they had finally emerged into the bright morning sun of a beautiful spring day to find their pathway snaking out of the tunnel and off into a forest. Near the forest's edge, a river of clear, blue water flowed through high banks covered with the greenest grass he thought he had ever seen. In the distance, Majic could hear the roar of a waterfall. He would never know for sure how much time they had spent in the tunnel and maze of caverns, but, by the time they exited into the sunlight, he had placed nine marks in his journal, indicating a nine-day long imprisonment.

CHAPTER 7

Majic fidgeted nervously with a blade of grass as he watched his master. With every fiber of his being, he wanted Orphen to come out of the water and back to the safety of the riverbank. He had watched nervously as the sorcerer had picked his way unsteadily across the slippery, wet boulders. Orphen had slipped and come precariously close to falling more than once, sending Majic to the verge of panic. He had been inches away from sprinting into the deep pool each time, but Orphen had just waved him away, instructing him to stay where he was. Now, the sorcerer was sitting on one of the largest boulders, halfway across the pool and directly under the roaring waterfall, with his eyes closed. He had removed his shirt, and now sat under the waterfall with the water crashing down onto his back, chest, and shoulders.

CHAPTER 8

A scraping sound awoke Majic. He turned over onto his back and slowly sat up, rubbing his eyes and shielding his face from the sun, which was just beginning to peek over one of the hills near their campsite. He was surprised to see Orphen staring back at him with a surprised look on his face. He had interrupted his master in the midst of packing some of their food into a small satchel. Majic was surprised that the young sorcerer was even awake. Orphen looked thin, pale, and exhausted --- as if he would fall over at the first hard gust of wind. Childman had managed to get almost an entire plate of food into the younger sorcerer the night before, but Orphen's clothes hung off of him. When he looked at Majic, his eyes were tired and dull, and it seemed as if it took a couple of seconds for him to realize who the boy was.

CHAPTER 9

Majic squinted up into the high, bright sun, using his arm to shield his face from its rays. It looked like it was probably close to noon, judging from the way the sun sat in the clear, blue sky. He was starving. He glanced over at Cleao, who was walking next to him, and knew that she was ready for a break, too. The girl was pale and exhausted, and she looked as if she would be unable to take another step. Orphen was stumbling along slightly behind them. Majic didn't even have to turn his head to pinpoint the young sorcerer's position. He could hear his master's feet slipping and skidding over the rocks as he tripped and almost fell again and again, just barely managing to catch himself in time to prevent a nasty spill onto the grassy, rocky mountain slope, and his breath came in short, ragged gasps that, to Majic's ears, sounded almost painful. Majic recognized that rattling sound. It was the sound of the walking dead --- of someone who was on their way to leaving this world. He knew his master was struggling to breathe, and it amazed him that Orphen was even still on his feet. Majic shook his head slowly as he thought that he had never met anyone whose will was as strong as his master's. He knew it was willpower alone that kept the young sorcerer stumbling forward now.

CHAPTER 10

They had been walking for about an hour, in a heavy silence punctuated only by an occasional sniffle from Majic, when Childman suddenly halted. Majic, who had been lagging behind the sorcerer, shuffling his feet and staring morosely at the ground instead of watching where he was going, slammed right into Childman's back. The older man grunted from the impact, and he turned slowly to glare at Majic.

"You should watch where you're going, boy," he snapped.

Majic sniffled again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. "Sorry, Master Childman," he mumbled, looking down at the ground. Without looking up, he asked, "Why … are we stopping?"

Into the Light

CHAPTER 11

Majic pushed the door open slightly and peered into the darkened room. It was very small, containing only one bed and a chair within its four plain, white walls. There was one window, directly across from the door and above the bed, but this portal was tightly shuttered against the sunlight outside. As a result, the room was dim, illuminated only by the soft, grayish light that leaked in around the shutters and the small shaft of light that came in through the partially open door. The light from the doorway slid across the floor, fell in between the chair and bed, and then ended its journey in the far corner of the room, where it landed on a small pile of blankets marking the spot where Majic had been sleeping for the past seven days. In the dim light, the boy could barely make out the two figures in the room --- one sleeping on the bed and the other sleeping sitting up in the chair.

CHAPTER 12

Majic woke as the morning sun slanted through a crack in the shutters and into his eyes. As he struggled to come awake, he could hear the sounds of someone moving around in the outer room. He glanced toward the door, and, through bleary, sleep-filled eyes, he could see that it was open just slightly --- a tiny crack that allowed the sound of someone making breakfast to seep into the room. As had become his habit during their time here, Majic looked toward the bed, intending to check on Orphen before rising to face the day. Suddenly, the boy was wide-awake. He jumped to his feet, and glanced around the room in a panic. For the first time in ten days, the bed and chair were both empty. Majic bolted for the door and pushed it open. It swung open wildly and hit the wall with a loud slam, startling Cleao, who was busy at the fire, making breakfast.

Aya sniffed and wiped his face on the sleeve of his trench coat. He could hear sirens approaching from several directions now, and the flashing strobes of police car lights already partially illuminated the alleyway in which he was hiding. He could hear policemen shouting as they canvassed the area around the office building several blocks away, where he had made his kill, and, when he stuck his head out of the doorway that concealed him, he could see the pinpoints of their flashlights bobbing up and down as they approached the alley.

Chapter 2

Yohji cursed as he stepped out of his car into the cold, pouring rain and approached Aya's Porsche. It hadn't been difficult for him to locate his teammate's car. He knew Aya well enough to know that he'd park fairly far away and walk to the kill site to prevent his car from being seen, and the tracking equipment installed on the automobile saw to the rest. But, still, as he stepped out of his vehicle, Yohji couldn't help but think that ten blocks seemed a bit excessive, even for someone as anal-retentive and compulsive as their leader. The tall blonde knew he'd have to go the rest of the way on foot, in order to retrace Aya's steps and investigate any potential hiding places, and the thought of walking that far, especially in the pouring rain and harsh, whipping wind, made him cringe. Yohji was a dyed-in-the-wool comfort whore. It wasn't something he tried to deny or hide from the rest of the world, and, in fact, he took a perverse sort of pride in it. Walking around in a rainstorm was definitely not something a comfort whore would do. He swore under his breath and thought about how much he hated Aya for subjecting him to this horrible, inhuman state of affairs as he deftly popped the locks on the redhead's car. A quick look inside told him that Aya hadn't been there for a while, but the light glinted off of something just under the passenger-side seat, catching his eye. Yohji leaned half in and half out of the car to drape his tall form over the seat in order to look underneath. Grunting, he retrieved Aya's cell phone and regarded it with an air of disdain.

Aya opened his eyes to find he was lying on his back in an open field. He couldn't remember falling asleep, but he knew he must have, since he had that fuzzy, slightly confused feeling he always had when he woke up in a strange place. The sun was warming his body, and it had been a long time since he had felt so warm and comfortable. The sky was a bright blue --- the kind of blue that was so pure it made your eyes water if you looked at it for too long. He could feel the tall, soft grass, which seemed to tower above him, caressing his bare arms.

Chapter 4

Yohji frowned and shook the redhead again, a little harder than before. Aya was soaking wet and shivering, both from the cold and from a fever. Yohji could feel the heat radiating off of his body, almost like it was coming off of him in waves. It reminded him of the way the air shimmers over a concrete sidewalk in the hottest part of the summer. He frowned again and brushed away the wet hair that was plastered to Aya's face. He couldn't get the redhead to wake up or respond, and Aya kept muttering. Most of it was fairly incoherent, but it sounded like he was calling out to someone. Yohji managed to catch a few words: "Aya", "Mom", and "Dad". Then, the redhead started to shake and sob, and muttered something that sounded like: "I don't want to be alone."

Chapter 5

Yohji paused in the doorway to the kitchen and quietly watched Aya. The swordsman was still sitting on the floor where the blonde had left him, slumped bonelessly against the wall near the door leading to the alley. Aya was so still; if it hadn't been for the sound of his rattling, wheezing breathing, Yohji would have thought he was dead. The tall blonde took a deep breath and squared his shoulders, as if to prepare himself for what he was going to find when he finally took a close look at his teammate's injuries. After a few moments, he crossed the kitchen, stopping momentarily to wet a few of the tablecloths and retrieve some soap at the sink, and knelt next to the redhead. Aya's eyes were closed, his head slumped forward, and, although it sounded as if he was having some difficulty breathing, his breaths were at least coming at a steady pace. He was trembling, and he didn't look up or move when Yohji approached and knelt next to him.

Chapter 7

Yohji sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. Through the small skylight directly above them, he had watched the sun rise and then set again. At least the rain had stopped. A small moan and movement drew his attention away from the skylight and back to the figure he held in his arms.

It had been a long night and day. Aya's fever seemed to steadily worsen, and his breathing had become progressively more difficult. Yohji could hear him wheezing, and, when he took a fairly deep breath, there was a tell-tale rattle deep within his lungs, indicating that his cold, which none of them had thought was very serious, had probably worked its way into a lovely case of pneumonia. Obviously, Aya had been a lot sicker than he had let on to any of them, and Yohji frowned as he looked down at his sleeping companion. It irritated him that the redhead gave no more thought than that to his own safety, but the tall blonde contented himself with the idea that, once Aya was back on his feet, he'd just beat the crap out of him for making him worry like this, and for dragging him out into last night's rain.

Chapter 8

Thanks to a quickly-placed phone call, Omi was waiting at the door for them when Yohji finally pulled his car into the parking area near the flower shop. The boy danced nervously from foot to foot as he held the door open and watched them. He reminded Yohji of a nervous little dog, and the sight of the boy made him chuckle in spite of the anxiety he felt over Aya's condition. He glanced over at the passenger side of the car as he came to a stop. Aya hadn't moved or made a sound since Yohji had knocked him unconscious to carry him to the car, and he hadn't given any signs of awakening any time soon. Yohji could see a large bruise discoloring the side of the redhead's face, marking the spot where his foot had struck the younger man. He gently brushed at the dark spot, as if he could wipe it away, and felt a new wave of guilt washing over him at the sight of it. He looked back toward Omi, who was still prancing nervously in the doorway, and tried to steel himself for the anger and retribution he knew he was going to face from the boy. Finally, he concluded he had stalled for as long as he could, and that he was never really going to be ready for what Omi would be dishing out.

Chapter 9

Aya opened his eyes and immediately felt disoriented and confused, as if the entire world was rushing in on him. Everything around him was burning; flames stretched as far as he could see, and the fire's roar was almost deafening. Terror washed over him as he realized that he was in the middle of a field full of fire. He shouted at the top of his lungs for Yohji, Omi, Ken, anyone. But he could barely even hear his own voice above the fire's noise. Although he continued to shout, he knew no one would respond; there wasn't anyone around to hear him yelling. Even if anyone had been there, it wouldn't have mattered. He knew there wasn't anyone left in this world to care whether he lived or died. He looked down and was surprised to realize that he was wearing his assassin gear. He couldn't remember putting it on. He stepped backward slightly, shielding his face, as flames jumped up in front of him and lapped at his heavy boots, scorching the silver buckles that ran along their sides. The smell of burning, melting leather was nauseating. He clamped his hand over his mouth and fell to his knees as he felt his stomach lurch.

Chapter 10

Aya's scream cut through the heavy nighttime silence that had fallen over the flower shop and the rooms they shared above it. It reached out, as if it was a living thing, to grab Yohji and drag him out of a sound sleep with icy, black talons. The oldest Weiss member jolted awake, succeeding in toppling the chair, which had been his bed for the last week, to the ground. As Aya screamed again, Yohji struggled to untangle his long legs from the chair's seat and arms. By the third scream, he had managed to free himself, and he stumbled toward the bed, closing the short distance with only a couple of long strides.

Chapter 11

"YOHJI! YOHJI! WAKE UP! HE'S GONE!"

Omi's voice screeched into Yohji's head and hammered against his skull. Yohji groaned and opened one eye to stare up at Aya's ceiling. The day had dawned, and the early morning light was slanting through the crack at the bottom of the closed blinds. It made the ceiling look so unbearably white that it actually hurt his eyes to look at it. He felt like he had just dropped into an uncomfortable, restless sleep moments before, and he didn't want to do anything except hang his head back over the back of this damn chair and go to sleep for about a hundred years. But, the screechy, panicked tone in Omi's voice and the hand shaking him by the shoulder wouldn't allow it. Yohji rolled his eye back up toward the impossibly white ceiling and then turned it slowly toward Omi, who was staring down at him and dancing nervously from foot to foot.

Chapter 12

Yohji quickly pulled into an empty parking space and turned off his car. About a block away, further up the street, he could see the large, blue, dancing hippo sign that marked the alleyway where he had found Aya on the night of that last mission. He hoped against hope that he would find the redhead there now. He didn't have any idea how long Aya had been gone before Omi had noticed his disappearance, and it had taken him almost an hour and a half to get here from the flower shop, thanks to the morning traffic. Yohji just hoped that Aya had come here on purpose, as opposed to wandering aimlessly around town in a feverish state. If it was the latter, it would take him forever to find the redhead.

Chapter 13

Yohji squirmed around to find a more comfortable position in the chair he had pulled up next to Aya's bed. It had been a few days since the redhead's sudden disappearing act, and, although he seemed to be improving, Yohji was worried that he would wander off again. Consequently, the tall blonde had appointed himself as Aya's shadow, and he had started filling his days by following the redhead around the apartment and flower shop. Luckily, the swordsman hadn't seemed inclined to disappear again, and, since the others refused to let him work in the shop until he was completely well, he spent most of his time either napping on the sofa in their shared living room, or sleeping in his own room. While this operated in Yohji's favor by making it easy to keep track of Aya, it also meant that the tall blonde was spending a lot of time in what he was quickly coming to think of as the most uncomfortable chair in the universe.

Chapter 14

Aya awoke to darkness engulfing him like a shroud. He blinked into it and wondered, for a moment, if his eyes were really open, or if he was still sleeping, but the view of the quarter moon through the window above his bed told him that he was definitely awake. He stared at the ceiling above him and realized that it didn't look quite right. The ceiling in his room was white and unmarred, but this ceiling had a large crack in the plaster directly above the bed. He stared at the moon through the window and slowly tried to put the pieces together. He could remember being in the shop that afternoon, showing Hank around the back room and supply area, yelling for the school girls to clear the shop, and then nothing.

"Hey," Yohji called as he entered the kitchen from the door to the outside. He paused long enough to remove his shoes and hang his jacket on a hook just inside the door. "Where's Aya?" he asked.

Omi was sitting at the kitchen table, tapping away at his laptop. He had turned to watch Yohji, and now he smiled at the older man. "In there," he replied, tilting his head to the side to indicate the living room.

Betrayal

Chapter 1

The early morning sun flowed into the kitchen, bouncing off of pale yellow walls and engulfing the room in bright, cheerful, golden light that eliminated the need for incandescent lighting. Omi paused in the doorway and quietly watched Aya. The older man was sitting at the kitchen table, his back to the door, reading the morning edition of the local newspaper. The young blonde smiled slightly as Aya rattled the paper irritably, and mumbled under his breath about one of the stories he'd just read, while slowly, almost absently, stirring his coffee. The spoon made a soft clinking sound as it struck the sides of the cup. Omi shook his head and chuckled under his breath. Aya drank his coffee black, and, for the life of him, Omi couldn't figure exactly why he always insisted on having a spoon in the cup. As far as the younger boy could tell, the spoon was completely unnecessary, but, yet, it was always there. Omi suppressed another giggle as Aya brought the cup to his lips and, without bothering to remove the spoon, took a noisy slurp. He didn't know exactly why, but the idea of Aya, who always seemed so perfect and controlled, slurping coffee like a "normal" person struck him as exceedingly funny.

Chapter 2

Within about ten minutes of opening the shop, Hank concluded that it would be a very slow, very long day. The previously clear, sunny day had given way to the mother of all rain storms, and he stood at the store's front window for a long time, sipping his fourth cup of coffee and watching the heavens unleash their wrath on the streets and sidewalks within his view. It was raining heavily enough to keep most people indoors, and the streets were almost deserted. The few brave souls who dared to venture out into the downpour scurried along the sidewalk clutching newspapers or brightly-colored umbrellas over their heads. Hank couldn't help but think that the umbrellas were the only spots of color in an otherwise-gray world.

Chapter 3

The sound of enraged snarling and frenzied barking woke Yohji from a dreamless sleep. He rolled over with a groan and fumbled on the nightstand for his clock. When he finally succeeded in locating the errant timepiece, he pulled it off of the bedside table and held it close to his eyes, squinting at it in the grayed-out, semi-darkness of his room. The glowing, digital numbers seemed to slide into strange shapes for a few minutes before he finally managed to make his eyes focus on them adequately enough to read the time.

"2:30," he groaned under his breath as he threw the clock toward the nightstand. It missed, and fell to the floor with a loud cracking sound that heralded breaking plastic and a trip to the corner electronics store. He placed his hand over his eyes and squinted at the ceiling through the space between his fingers. 'It's not that dark. Must be in the P.M.,' he thought as he slowly willed his mind to get over the shock of being so abruptly and rudely awakened. He ran his fingers through his tangled hair and tried to figure out just how long he had been asleep. He could vaguely remember stumbling back into his room at around five that morning.

Chapter 4

Yohji squirmed around on the hard, uncomfortable chair as he vainly tried to shift into a position that would allow him to remain seated without actually making his ass go completely numb. He finally realized that his quest was futile, and stood to pace up and down the short hallway leading from the emergency room waiting area to the treatment rooms. He paused at the double doors separating the two spaces and leaned his head against the glass pane inset in one of the doors. He knew Aya was safe, in one of the rooms just beyond, but he would have preferred to stay with his injured teammate. He told himself that he was being overprotective and irrational, but he knew he wouldn't be happy until he had Aya in sight again. Every time he closed his eyes, he could see Aya falling through the shop's window amid a shower of glittering glass, Aya sailing into the street directly in front of that car, and the smug, satisfied grin on Schuldich's face as the German pushed Aya into the street. Yohji could feel anger overwhelming him again, and he turned away from the doors to slam his fist into the wall. The noise drew the attention of the nurses working the ER desk, and they glanced at Yohji disapprovingly. The tall blonde tried to give them one of his patented, playboy smiles --- the kind that typically had women fawning and swooning all over him, but he knew he failed miserably. The day's events had shaken him up so much that he couldn't even concentrate on charming women --- just one more reason to hate that German fucker.

Chapter 5

On his way downstairs, Yohji ducked into the bathroom long enough to grab an elastic tie for his hair. When he clicked on the overhead light, he caught a brief glimpse of his own image in the mirror above the sink, and he couldn't help but stop and stare. Yohji had always prided himself on his appearance, and, now, he didn't recognize the man staring back at him. Uncombed, slightly greasy hair, pale, ashy-looking skin, gaunt, sunken-in cheeks, and hollow, exhausted eyes almost made him think that there was a stranger living in the bathroom mirror. He hadn't realized it, but he had pretty much run himself ragged in the past few weeks, keeping Aya under wraps and making sure that Weiss ran on its normal schedule without getting the redhead involved. He hadn't minded; he still didn't mind. All he wanted was to make sure that Aya made a full recovery, but, now that he really stopped to think about it, he couldn't remember the last time he had felt this exhausted. He knew that Omi and Ken were both just as tired. Weiss was definitely a four-man team. It wasn't possible to carry out their missions one man short, not considering the kind of assignments Kritiker normally dished out. It was probably why Omi had gotten sick, and it was likely only a matter of time before the same thing happened to Ken, too. Yohji wasn't worried about getting sick himself. As he had told Omi earlier that day, he never caught anything. He liked to attribute it to his superior genetic makeup, but, if the truth was known, it probably really was because of all the cigarettes he smoked and the alcohol he drank on an almost daily basis, just like Omi had said. Yohji ran his hands over his face in an effort to wipe away the tiredness and scrunched his mouth up into a frown. He hated it when the kid was right, and Omi was right almost all the time, damn him.

Chapter 6

The rain had stopped for a while, but it had just started up again, a slow, steady drizzle that seemed to hang in the streetlights' glow like a soft, diaphanous curtain. Ken stood in the flower shop's back doorway and watched as Hank slowly walked down the alley. The normally cheerful, jovial man walked away from him looking like a much older person --- bent over, hunched against the slightly chilly breeze, and moving with a stumbling, slow gait as if the weight of the world rested on his shoulders. Ken watched until Hank's figure blurred in the darkness between the streetlights, and, finally, seemed to blend in and melt away with the drizzling rain. Once he had disappeared completely, the ex-goalie retreated back into the warmth of the flower shop, lost in thought.

Chapter 7

The sunlight slanting through the window over Yohji's bed finally worked its way into Aya's subconscious and slowly pulled him into the waking world. He groaned and wriggled out from under Bubba's weight enough to roll over onto his back, wincing and hissing sharply in pain as he felt his stitches tug and pull. He threw one arm across his face to shield his eyes from the sun. He left enough space so that he could slightly see around his arm, and, as he stared at the long crack running across the ceiling directly above Yohji's bed, he struggled to gather his muddy thoughts.

Chapter 8

Ken grumbled, running fingers through messy hair as he stumbled out of his room and down the stairs. As he slowly made his way down the hallway, struggling to collect his thoughts, he paused to look into the other rooms. As expected, Aya's room was still empty, since the redhead was recuperating in Yohji's room. He paused briefly at Omi's open doorway and smiled when he saw the youngest Weiss assassin, sprawled sideways on the bed, sound asleep. He remembered Yohji mentioning the boy was sick with the flu, and he was relieved to at least see that Omi seemed to be resting well. A little further down the hall, he paused at Yohji's door, which was only slightly ajar. Ken didn't want to disturb Yohji, Aya, or, even worse, Bubba, so he didn't push the door open any farther. Instead, he peeked in through the small crack, which only allowed him a view of part of the room. He could see Yohji, sleeping in the chair pulled next to the bed. He smiled and continued down the hall toward the stairs.

Betrayal

Chapter 9

"Fuck!" Yohji snapped.

He slammed the phone handset down and sighed irritably as he checked his watch. 11:30 A.M. --- almost three hours since Ken had seen Aya disappear into that black sedan with the two Kritiker agents. He ran his hand through his messy, tangled hair and struggled to come fully awake. After seeing Aya leave, Ken had immediately burst into his room screaming that the redhead was gone. After he had gotten the ex-goalie calmed down enough to explain what had happened, Yohji had stumbled downstairs, falling about half-way in his sleep-fogged stupor, and immediately punched in Manx's cell phone number. Unfortunately, the red-haired Kritiker agent hadn't seen fit to answer the call. Manx's conspicuous absence and her silent treatment left Yohji with a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. But, for now, he couldn't do anything else. Yohji sighed in frustration and, for about the hundredth time that morning, dialed in Manx's cell.

Betrayal

Chapter 10

Aya squirmed around in an attempt to find a more comfortable position on the cold, hard, metal chair on which he was currently seated. He heard voices outside the room, and he turned toward the door, as if he expected Manx or, even, Persia, to walk in at any moment. His Kritiker "escorts" had brought him directly to Persia's secret base of operations. They had deposited him in this room almost immediately upon arrival, and he had been waiting here ever since --- almost four hours.

Chapter 11

Aya tripped and almost fell as he came up the steps leading to the kitchen's back door. He barely managed to stay on his feet by grabbing hold of the stair rail, but it cost him. He winced and struggled to catch his breath as he jerked to a stop and felt the wound in his side pull open and start to bleed. It had started raining again, a fine, cold drizzle, and the steps were slick. He fumbled with his keys for a few seconds, swearing under his breath as he struggled to force his cold-numbed fingers to work properly. Finally, when the key slid home into the lock and he heard the bolt click open, he sighed in relief.

Chapter 12

The night was still dark, although there were only a few hours left until dawn. As they stepped from the flower shop's back door into the pre-dawn chill, Yohji shivered and squinted up into the street light just above them. It had been a fair day, sunny with miles and miles of cloudless, blue sky, but, now, he could see a fine drizzle misting through the light's yellow glow. As he pulled the door closed behind him with a soft click, Yohji took the opportunity to steal a glance toward Aya.

Chapter 13

The sound of frantic, heavy pounding awakened Hank from an uneasy, restless sleep. He rolled over and reached for the clock that sat on the floor next to his futon. He fumbled briefly with it in the dark, but, after a few seconds, he succeeded in grabbing it. Muttering in irritation, he rolled back over onto his back and held the timepiece over his head, a few inches away from his eyes. At first glance, it appeared to read 4 A.M., but Hank thought that couldn't be right. He shook his head slightly and rubbed at his sleep-bleared eyes before again looking at the clock.

Chapter 1

Floating, drifting aimlessly through an endless sea of darkness. Darkness above, darkness below, darkness all around. Everywhere he looked, each direction he turned … there was only black --- cold, hard, merciless blackness grabbing at him with icy talons. It was him … his body, and, yet, it wasn't. He felt detached, as if he was just an uninvolved, impartial observer, even though he could feel himself sinking lower and lower into the creeping, all-consuming dark. It was heavy, and pushed against his body like a living beast, wrapping him in its arms and crushing life and breath right out of him. Breathing was hard --- a painful torture that hardly seemed worth the effort --- and, the deeper he sank, the more the black drank him in, the harder it became. He thought he could see a surface to the darkness, and he struggled to reach it. But, it was too hard, almost impossible, when the beast refused to release him from its icy grip. No matter how hard he fought, he couldn't get free; it wouldn't let him go, and he couldn't reach the surface. Finally, he cried out, begging for help, for someone to save him. But, there was no answer. He was alone. No one was coming for him; no one was going to help him; no one was going to save him. He felt despair and fear close in on him, adding their weight to that of the black beast crushing in on him.

Chapter 2

Hank returned from his on-shore supply run to find Yohji just where he had expected the tall blonde to be --- on deck, just beyond the boat's pilot house. They had been here for almost two weeks now, and, it seemed that Yohji was out here --- leaning against the rail, smoking, and staring at nothing --- whenever he wasn't with Aya. There was a strong wind coming off the ocean. It caused the boat to sway back and forth in the water and caught at Yohji's shoulder-length hair, sending it flying roughly about his face. Even so, the smoke from the tall man's cigarette seemed to hang around his head, almost like an ashy-gray halo. For a moment, Hank could almost believe it was a halo, marking the blonde for the fallen angel that he was. Despite the wet cold and stiff wind, the tall man wore no jacket, sought no protection from the elements. It was almost as if he couldn't feel the cold or the sting of the salt spray kicked up by the wind, which came as no surprise to Hank. Yohji had been through several kinds of hell in the past two weeks, and he was so physically and mentally exhausted that he had gone completely numb. As Hank watched from the pilot house, he found himself thinking that the blonde looked like a statue; the only movements the Texan could see were small ones when Yohji would lift the cigarette to his mouth, or briefly lift his hand to flick ashes into the water.

The stairs led to a passageway running the length of the boat below deck. One end opened into the galley, which was at the front of the yacht. Opposite the galley were several cabins, all of which opened out onto this main passage. If he reached the bottom of the stairs and turned right, Hank would pass two empty cabins on the right side of the passage, before he came to the one Ran and Yohji shared. If he continued in that direction, he would eventually reach his cabin, the last one on the left side of the passage, at the very rear of the boat. The cabins were small, containing nothing more than a trundle bed, which was attached to the wall across from the doorway, a writing desk attached to the wall under the port hole, a straight-backed, wooden desk chair, and a small chest-of-drawers.

Yohji pulled the collar of his jacket up around his ears to shield them from the wind as he stepped off the motorboat they used to commute back and forth between the yacht and the city. It had been cold on the boat, which he had attributed to being on the water, but, now that he was on dry land again, he wasn't finding it to be much warmer. He shivered and stuffed his hands into his pockets as he walked off the pier, waving his thanks to the man who tied up the motorboat for him.

Chapter 5

Yohji reached the park, which was in the middle of a small, newly-redeveloped neighborhood, slightly before the sun set. He quickly scanned the area, but, finding no sign of Ken or Omi, he sank down onto a bench that, although hidden in deep shadow, offered an unobstructed view of the entrance, and waited. Although you could usually find people in the park at all hours of the day or night --- lovers strolling arm-in-arm, mothers with children, groups of kids playing various sports, or people sitting and enjoying the air --- the grounds were almost deserted this evening, probably because of the cold weather and the snow. He sighed and removed his sunglasses to pinch the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger, and then ran his hand through his hair, which was matted and tangled, thanks to almost an entire day spent in the wind and snow. He hadn't realized how long his hair had become during the past two weeks, and he felt a little twinge of surprise to realize his fingers now traveled well past his shoulders before running out of hair. Changing his appearance had seemed like a good idea, and he had, briefly, thought about cutting his hair, but he hadn't had the heart to do it. He had always looked so stupid with short hair, anyhow, so he had decided to just leave it as it was and take a chance on someone from Kritiker recognizing him on the street. So far, though, it hadn't proved to be a problem, probably because he had one of those faces that sort of "blended in", despite his unusual hair and eye coloring. Now, Aya … well, that was a different story. That guy stood out like a sore thumb, with his porcelain-white skin, fine-boned facial features, and bluish-violet eyes … not to mention the red hair. Yohji sighed as he thought, for a moment, it was probably a good thing he was the one doing all this surveillance work in the city, instead of Aya.

Chapter 6

Aya slowly came awake, acutely aware he was being stared at intently. Forcing his eyes open was, apparently, a long, drawn-out process containing more than a few kinks. It had seemed like a simple enough idea when his brain had whispered it to him, but he couldn't get his body to respond to his brain's demands. He didn't like the idea of being stared at, but the darkness surrounding him seemed a preferable alternative to arguing with his stubborn body. He felt like he had been enveloped in it for a long time, and it was warm, safe, and comfortable as it beckoned to him with soft, reassuring fingers. He wanted to go back there, to keep his eyes closed and give in to his body's demands for rest. Besides, he rationalized, his recent past history, added to the fact he felt like he'd been run over by a cement truck or something, meant it was probably only Yohji staring at him. For some reason, the thought of the tall blonde watching him didn't bother him all that much.

Chapter 7

Yohji stood in the doorway of the pilot house watching Aya, who was practicing on the deck. The tall blonde leaned against one side of the door frame, a coffee cup clenched in one hand, his free arm wrapped around his stomach, and a small frown on his face. His eyes followed the complicated, twisting, zigzag path Aya traveled across the deck, as he executed one complex practice pattern after another. It was cold, and a strong wind battered the yacht from side-to-side, pushing large whitecaps up against the boat until water came over the sides to flow across the deck. Every few seconds, another loud crash would herald the arrival of more water. Gallons upon gallons washed over the deck, eddying and flowing around Aya, sometimes only ankle-deep, but, at other times, coming as high as his knees before rolling off the other side of the yacht and back into the ocean. The deck was wet and slick, and the footing was treacherous. Yohji was afraid Aya was either going to slip and fall over the railing, or a particularly large wave was going to sweep him off the deck. He took another sip of coffee and frowned again, wishing the redhead would just come back inside. Still, Yohji knew he'd never convince Aya to do that, so he hovered and worried silently in the pilot house door, tensed and prepared to go to the redhead's rescue, should the need arise. It wasn't nearly satisfactory to the tall blonde, but he knew, under the circumstances, it was the best he could do.

Chapter 8

The address in the classifieds led them to a coffee shop called "Kitty's Cup". Immediately after finding the ad, Aya and Yohji did a brief canvass of the shop and its surrounding neighborhood, hoping they would get lucky and find some clue that would lead them to where Schuldich was keeping Hank's daughter. Unfortunately, "Kitty's Cup" was located in a trendy, busy business district near downtown, which meant there weren't any likely hiding places within a several mile radius of the restaurant. They had known it was unlikely, but, all the same, they had hoped the desire for revenge might have driven Schuldich into being sloppy. Unfortunately, the German's lust for revenge and crazed anger hadn't caused him to miss a step, and, in this, as in all other things, Schuldich was proving to be a smart, shrewd, formidable foe. They had quickly concluded that Schuldich, clever as always, had chosen a truly neutral meeting location, and, although they had no proof, Aya and Yohji both suspected it was miles away from where he had hidden his prize. The crazy German might have been holding Keiko on the city's outskirts, or, even, in another town.

Chapter 9

Yohji checked his watch as he entered a convenience store about ten blocks from the coffee shop to purchase yet another pre-paid cell phone, some pretzels, and a soda. After paying for his purchases with cash, he traveled another several blocks to a park he had seen during an earlier reconnaissance of the area. He found an out-of-the-way bench and sat down to eat his pretzels, drink his soda, and wait. He didn't have any doubt Keiko was safe. Schuldich's goal had been revenge against Aya, and, no matter how evil or deranged the German was, Yohji didn't think he'd hurt a little kid, unless it served his purposes. Once he had gotten his hands on Aya, Schuldich no longer needed the girl. Of course, putting her at a Kritiker safe house made things a lot more difficult for Yohji, since he wasn't exactly on friendly terms with the organization at the moment. Knowing the German, Schuldich had probably seen using the safe house as a joke.

Two days after his conversation with Omi and Ken, Yohji and Hank were sitting across from each other in the yacht's little galley. After Yohji had explained what had happened, as far as he knew, during the meeting with Schuldich, where Keiko was, and how they were going to get her back, the two men had done a good job of completely avoiding the subjects of Keiko and Aya. In fact, they hardly talked at all, and a tense, worried, almost-palpable silence had prevailed over the boat ever since Yohji had returned from the city alone.

Chapter 11

'Damn, I feel like shit,' Aya thought as he came awake. He groaned and forced his eyes open, groaning again, in frustration this time, when all he saw was hard, cold, concrete floor that seemed to stretch out into eternity, punctuated only by towering, metal posts spaced every ten feet or so, pretty much as far as his eye could see. Aya twisted his head slightly, changing his point of view, and saw, in the distance, gray metal walls --- three of them --- which told him he must be lying close to the fourth one. He had been dumped, half on his side and half on his stomach, and he could feel the wall's cold metal cutting into his back. After a couple of moments, the concrete chilling his cheek started to make his headache worse, and Aya decided sitting up was probably preferable to his current position.

Yohji entered the Kitty's Cup, pulling the door closed behind him with a clang of the bells attached to it. The warmth of the shop was a welcome relief from the chilly, damp wind outside, and the homey smells of roasting coffee and sizzling eggs and bacon that greeted him seemed to warm him from the inside, as well. He paused in the doorway for a moment, drinking in the smells and scanning the store's interior. The shop had only been open for about twenty minutes, so it wasn't very crowded. It didn't take long for Yohji to spot Bradley Crawford seated at the dark booth in the very back of the shop, the same booth from which Aya had disappeared what seemed like an eternity ago.

Chapter 13

Aya awoke slowly, to the feeling of someone gently running their fingers through his hair. He couldn't remember exactly where he was, or how long he'd been here, but, although this place felt unfamiliar and strange, he didn't believe he was in danger. He felt safe, warm, and protected. He forced his eyes open, fighting through the muzzy, light-headed feeling that threatened to consume him. It would be so much easier to give in to that feeling, to go back to sleep, instead of opening his eyes and facing whatever reality might be waiting for him. He was vaguely, dimly aware of aches and pains running throughout his body: the wounds on his back, which had become infected and re-opened so many times they hadn't had any chance to heal; the gunshot wound he had received in his escape from Kritiker, which still felt like it had only happened yesterday; the injuries he'd received in this latest set-to with Schuldich. He wasn't positive, but it felt like there were some broken bones --- ribs, almost certainly, and, maybe, a collarbone, and dislocated shoulder. All in all, his body was one, sore, festering, throbbing ache --- all the more reason to retreat back into the safety of knowing and feeling nothing, which the blackness offered him.

Chapter 14

Yohji wasn't more than five minutes away from the coffee shop, after his meeting with Crawford, when his cell rang. He had a pretty good idea who it was, considering that no one except for Omi and Ken had his number. Well, there was that waitress, too, but he didn't expect it to be her. Yohji frowned as he clicked on the phone. His fingers were slightly numb from the cold, and it took a few missed, fumbling tries before he was able to hit the correct button.

"What the hell are you doing calling me like this?" he snapped into the cell, offering no other greeting.

Yohji pulled his stolen Lincoln Continental into a make-shift parking spot in the shadow of the building where Crawford had said Schuldich was holding Aya. Normally, he'd never park this close, but he still had a bad feeling about this whole thing, and he couldn't shake the nagging voice that kept telling him he'd need the car close at hand. Besides, Aya hadn't been in the best shape when Schuldich had grabbed him, and that was five days ago. Who knew what kind of shape he'd be in now. He might not be able to make it to a car parked too far away.

Yohji paced the floor of the waiting room, just outside the emergency room's surgical area. Aya was back there, fighting for his life. Up toward the nurses' desk, turn around, walk to the other end of the room, near the doors, pause, sigh in frustration, and slam his fist into the wall, only to turn around and do the whole thing again, over and over, until it seemed like he would wear a path in the floor and the rest of the people in the waiting room started watching him with nervous looks on their faces. On his tenth circuit, a hushed voice interrupted his thoughts.

Chapter 17

Yohji stood in the kitchen doorway of their apartment above the flower shop, framed in the open door. A slight, cool breeze wafted into the room, bringing the smells and sounds of early Spring with it. He leaned against one side of the door jamb, holding a steaming cup of coffee in one hand, and silently watched Aya through the open doorway. It was the first warm, sunny day they'd had in the past several months, and the redhead seemed to be taking advantage of the early morning sunlight. Aya was sitting three steps down from the top of the stairway that led from their second-story kitchen to the alley beneath. He was leaning against the stair rail, soaking up the early morning sun's warm rays. His back was to the door, so Yohji couldn't see his face, but the tall blonde imagined he probably had his eyes closed. Aya looked more peaceful and at ease than he'd seen him in quite some time. Bubba sat on the step next to the redhead. The dog had looked up, briefly acknowledging Yohji's presence with a whine of greeting, but Aya hadn't bothered to turn around.

Epilogue

Hank leaned on his rake, tilting his head toward the sky, eyes closed, so that the sun's warmth could wash over him. He saw nothing but the color red behind his closed lids, but he felt the warming, healing rays caressing his face and embracing him. He loved the way it felt; it reminded him of the way his beloved Yuki had held him, when she was alive. When he stood like this, the sun caressing his skin, he almost felt like she was there with him, encircling him with her arms and holding her soft, warm cheek against his face. He sighed softly and opened his eyes, looking around him and slowly taking in the neat, white, two-bedroom house with its broad porch that surrounded it on three sides, the neatly-clipped, green lawn, the flowerbeds bursting with colored blooms of several varieties, the hedges, which surrounded the lawn and hid the encircling chain-link fence from view, and the small pile of grass clippings at his feet, which he was presently raking. Hank smiled. He couldn't help it. His house, his lawn, his flowerbeds, his hedges, his fence, his pile of grass clippings --- he still couldn't believe it. He just couldn't believe his good fortune.

Chapter 1

Aya sighed. Resting his head on the table, he pillowed his chin on his arms and stared at the kitchen sink. The apartment was almost oppressively quiet, even this room, which, if it was possible for buildings to have a soul, was where the Koneko's lay. The kitchen was the one room where they all gathered on a regular basis --- to cook meals, eat, and, sometimes, just talk about their adventures for that day. They all gathered in the basement briefing room, too, but, considering what they discussed down there, no one could ever think of that space as harboring any kind of "soul". Aya would never admit it to the others, but he enjoyed those times when everyone was together like that. They were easy and comfortable. The domestic sounds of food being prepared and the gentle, good-natured teasing and banter among Omi, Yohji, and Ken reminded him of when he had had a family … when he had had a home. When everyone was there, he was able to worry a little less about the others. They were always targets. That was part of being Weiss. The others chose to pretend otherwise, and seemed to live in blissful ignorance of their fate, but Aya found he couldn't ignore it. He was fiercely protective and jealous of those he cared for, tending to hold tightly to the things and people he felt were important, just so he wouldn't have to suffer the pain and grief he'd gone through when he had lost his parents and sister. If he could see them, he knew they were safe.

Chapter 2

The noise in the night club was almost deafening --- a constant, dull, throbbing roar that vibrated and boomed through the floor, into your feet, up your legs, and through your body until it finally settled in your chest and head, where it rattled your ribs and shook your brain, refusing to let go. Loud rock music rumbled through giant speakers that hung from the ceiling above a dance floor so crowded there wasn't room to breathe, much less truly move. The music reverberated and rumbled around the room, shaking the floor and walls, until nothing about it was distinguishable, except for the heavy, thrumming, bass beat that seemed to drive everything and everyone in the crowded, smoky club. The room was dark, lit only by spotlights nestled at its corners and strobe lights that hung from the middle of the ceiling, flashing and blinking circles of colored light across the mindless people crowding the dance floor, moving dully to the beat of the music as if they were partaking in some tribal ritual. Fans pumped a soft haze of fake smoke into the air, where a fog of cigarette smoke, which drifted around the floor and bar before floating up to hang just under the ceiling, joined it to create a dense, gray cloud of indoor smog.

Chapter 3

Yohji rolled over in bed, stretched, and smiled in his sleep. He was in the middle of the best dream. He and Asuka were in his car, with the top down, driving through the most beautiful forest he had ever seen. It was a gorgeous, early spring morning, and the sky was the kind of pure, crystal blue that makes you squint and brings tears to your eyes when you look at it. The trees towered above, interlocking branches closing in over the road, and the air in the shady spots felt cool and fresh on his skin --- a journey from the gentle warmth of spring to the first chill of autumn within the span of seconds, only to emerge in spring again at the next break in the forest canopy, the next sunny spot on the road. Asuka was so much more beautiful than he remembered. Memories, colored by the pain of loss, made her perfect, her flaws forgotten in the haze of bliss over having her near him once more. Her arm rested against the headrest of his seat, and she ran her fingers through his hair, tugging playfully at the shoulder-length ends. He had missed her so much, but, now, Yohji knew he had been foolish to feel that way. She hadn't left him. She was still alive. All that other stuff --- the bad memories … watching her die, screaming her name as he saw her fall, sobbing out his pain night after night, the never-ending, hollow ache she had left --- was the dream. This … this was real. She was alive, and she was here, with him, just like always.

Chapter 4

Omi came awake to a chaotic symphony of unfamiliar sounds --- metal walls creaking and groaning as they struggled against the slightest breeze, the muffled honking and tire screeches of distant traffic, and a bit closer, but still muffled, the steady, dull, throbbing hum of heavy construction equipment. He felt confused and disoriented, and he kept his eyes tightly shut, as the unfamiliar sounds washed over him. He had expected, upon awakening, to hear the noises he always heard. Familiar sounds that said "home" to him: Ken bouncing his soccer ball off the walls or clinking dishes in the kitchen; the muted drone of the television, which Ken and Yohji insisted always stay on --- no one ever really paid attention to what was showing, but the chain-smoking blonde and the ex-goalie hated silence; Aya yelling at Yohji, or, more likely Ken, about one thing or another; or, on rare occasions, the sound of playful bickering between the swordsman and Yohji. Those were the noises that drifted up to Omi's room on the rare mornings when he wasn't the first in the house to wake, but, the sounds he heard now --- screeching metal, like fingernails on a blackboard, the low, distant hum and throb of traffic and construction --- were completely foreign. He must not be at home, then. So, where was he?

Chapter 5

Aya's life had become a twisted, burning, pain-filled, hellish blur. He had a dim recollection of being awakened from a coma-like sleep by a pair of huge, rough hands yanking him off the floor with enough force to make his teeth clatter together, of being dragged across the dusty, gritty concrete by his hair, of his shirt being ripped off and tossed aside, of harsh, growled curses spoken in perfect Japanese with a heavy English accent. You couldn't really call them memories, since his brain had reached the point where it couldn't separate the here and now from what once had been. More like whispers of memory or ghosts of reality, just like all the other information jumbled together in his aching, throbbing head. The screaming pain of his arms being pulled from their sockets told him he was hanging off the ground, probably from the ceiling. At least, he thought he was hanging. He thought it was real. It felt real … the way that pain joined and blended with the freight train of agony roaring through his head, until his entire body became one raw, bleeding, throbbing ache of hurt. It felt real, but, then again, Aya had to admit he wasn't at his best right now.

Chapter 6

Aya's scream reached in with icy, black talons and yanked Omi out of a restless, fitful sleep haunted by images of the swordsman collapsing, again and again, in a pool of blood. The boy jolted upright, confused, disoriented, and struck through, to his very core, with terror. He sat there for several minutes, panting, feeling his heart thump against his ribs, hand clenched in the fabric at the front of his shirt, cold sweat trickling down his back, and listened to the wail resound and echo off the building. He almost believed he had heard it in his dream, but, after a few moments, he realized it was too big, too real, to have been part of that nightmare world. The sound seemed to expand, filling the cavernous space until Omi thought the warehouse would explode, or, maybe, he'd go mad before it was finally done. It seemed to go on forever, a mournful, pain-filled noise that made his stomach clench in fear and brought tears to his eyes. But, suddenly, almost as quickly as it had started, it stopped, leaving in its wake a soundless void. Nothing moved, nothing breathed … even the building seemed to stop creaking.

Chapter 7

Ken padded down the hall and stopped in front of Yohji's room. He stood there for several moments, shifting his weight from one foot to the other and listening to the old wood squeaking under him, as he stared at the door, which was ajar. Light seeped out through the small opening, cutting a pie-wedged swath through the hallway's murky darkness, and Ken took the soft yellow glow to mean Yohji was inside. He wanted to go in, wanted to talk to Yohji, maybe even make peace with the chain-smoking blonde, but he was nervous and unsure. He didn't know how to approach the older man, and he wasn't sure if Yohji would accept his friendship any longer. Ken shifted again, eliciting a new series of nervous squeaks and creaks from the floor beneath him, and debated over what he should do. They hadn't talked --- not really --- since that day in the Crazy Geisha's parking lot, the first day they had known, for sure, that Omi and Aya were gone. Ken couldn't stop blaming Aya for what had happened, and Yohji couldn't stop hating the ex-goalie for that, so the two of them had come to a tacit understanding. They wouldn't talk about it. But, since the frantic search for their missing teammates seemed to consume every waking hour as well as the few sleeping ones, their "understanding" meant they hadn't spoken ten words to each other since Aya and Omi had fallen off the face of the earth.

Heat --- blinding, mind-numbing heat --- beating down on him, scorching his broken, throbbing body and making breathing next to impossible. Rivulets of sweat trickling across his skin, burning and stinging like thousands of needles and pinpoints as they seeped into gaping, bleeding wounds and flowed over broken, raw skin. The throb and ache of arms stretched beyond their limits, nearly pulled from their sockets. Slowly, ever so slowly, these sensations managed to work their way through Aya's exhausted subconscious, pulling him from the deep, engulfing black in which he'd been drifting into the harsh, white-hot, glaring realm of reality.

Chapter 9

Ken stood on the bottom step, shifting his weight from one foot to the other, and listening to the sounds that floated out of the darkened briefing room --- muttered curses and the soft tick-tack of someone typing. He couldn't help but think back to the last time he'd stood here, feeling awkward and uncomfortable about facing one of his teammates. But, then, it had been Yohji. This time, Omi was the one ensconced in the cave-like room. They hadn't spoken, other than basic, every-day pleasantries, since the night he and Yohji had picked the boy up at that coffee shop. It was like living with a stranger, instead of the teammate who had, over the years, become his closest friend, and Ken was sick of it. He was sick of the whole, damn thing --- of the bland words spoken in passing, nothing more than the common courtesy you'd extend a stranger; of the tension hanging in the air between them; of pretending nothing was wrong when this was eating him alive. So, once again, the ex-goalie found himself standing on this bottom stair, causing it to creak and squeak underneath his shifting weight, and wondering how the hell he could get past what had happened and make peace with someone who meant the world to him. Ken sighed. He wondered why he had the uncanny knack for pissing off everyone around him, and, much as he hated to, he couldn't help but wonder if, maybe, his failure to get along with Aya had more to do with his personality and stubbornness than the redhead's.

"Hey!" Omi snapped, leaning forward, over the large hole in which Yohji and Ken were standing, "Can't you dig any faster?"

His voice was low, hardly more than a whisper, but a heavy, midnight silence blanketed the cemetery and made Omi's words carry as clearly as if he had shouted. The kid's voice seemed so out of place. It ran up Yohji's spine and made his teeth itch, like the screech of fingernails across a blackboard, and he shuddered as Omi shined a flashlight in his face.

Ken jumped when he heard someone fumbling with the lock on the kitchen's back door. He paused in the middle of rinsing a plate, and stared in the direction of the sound. The water dripped off the sudsy dish and landed in the sink with soft, little plips as he wondered who it was. They were the only ones who used the back door, except for a few deliveries, or, maybe, his soccer kids or one of Yohji's "dates". He wasn't expecting anyone. Yohji and Omi had left an hour ago, intending to stop off at Magic Bus Hospital with flowers for Aya's sister, run a couple of errands, and then get to the hospital in time for visiting hours, so they could check up on Aya. Neither of them had said so, but Ken suspected they didn't like leaving the redhead alone. He hadn't been to see Aya, but his teammates had told him the swordsman was pretty messed up, physically and emotionally. Ken figured it stood to reason, considering everything the guy had been through. Yohji and Omi both thought Aya might do something stupid, if left too much to his own devices, and they had been spending most of their time at the hospital, keeping an eye on the quiet man. The ex-goalie had to admit he had mixed feelings about it. He hadn't seen very much of Omi. He missed his friend and resented the hell out of Aya for diverting the young blonde's attention so completely. But, on the other hand, they had kept the shop closed a lot, which meant less fan-girl face time … and that was always a good thing, in Ken's mind.

Sacrifice

Epilogue

Aya stopped at the top of the stairs and listened to the voices that floated up to him. Although he couldn't tell what they were saying, it sounded like everyone else was in the kitchen. The redhead took a deep breath, steeling his resolve for the fight he knew was coming. It had been a little over a month now, since he had come home, and he had decided it was time to resume training. He was out of shape, and he had to get back to mission-ready status as quickly as possible. So far, Kritiker had gone pretty easy on the team. Manx had said it was because of his injuries, but Aya suspected it had more to do with the fact she had forced Weiss into that last mission, despite his protests the team wasn't ready. Whatever the reason, he was grateful for the respite. The last thing he wanted was to become a liability to the rest of them. The thought of having to stay at home while the other three went out and risked their lives made him sick.

Hurt

(a wk fanfiction by tex-chan)

Yohji paused at the corner. He leaned against a lamp post and watched the cars whiz by in front of him as he lit a cigarette. His pose was casual and nonchalant --- just a guy, out enjoying the day, pausing to engage in a favorite vice. Still, despite the cool, calm demeanor he struggled to project, it took three tries before the lighter sprang to life. Yohji told himself it had nothing to do with the fact his hands were shaking so badly he could barely even hang on to the small, metal object. He knew it was a lie, almost as soon as his mind formed the thought, but, he forced himself to take comfort in it, just the same. He wasn't upset. He wasn't hollow and empty. He wasn't jaded and used up at the ripe old age of twenty-whatever. He wasn't beyond caring what happened to him, beyond placing any value on his own life. He didn't want to scream out the frustration and rage that were eating him alive, fueled by a loss he'd never get over, a hurt that would never heal. Nothing could bother him today. There wasn't anything special about today at all. The damn lighter just needed more fluid, that's all. It didn't have anything to do with his trembling hands and his heart hammering against his chest so hard his ribs ached. Today was just another ordinary day in the shit-pile world that made up Yohji Kudou's universe.

Crap. I hate this job. I really hate it. I know I used to be a PI, but, come on … I am not the kind of guy who likes to stand around for hours in the rain and the cold and the dark, just waiting for something to happen. Nope. Not me. I like my creature comforts. I like them a lot. If I was religious, I would say I was a hedonist, but I never really got religion. What does someone like me need with that shit, anyhow? Boys' Night Out

(a wk writing challenge response by tex-chan)

"I think we lost them … finally," Yohji panted. "Crap, but they were some persistent bastards."

He slowed from a run into a jog, and, after a few minutes, eased into a normal walk, keeping pace and blending in with the pedestrian traffic around them on the crowded sidewalk. He glanced over his shoulder as he spoke, giving his companion a crooked grin. Maybe he was trying to gauge his partner's mood, or, maybe, he had hoped for some kind of reply to his comment -- some sort of agreement that, why, yes, the policemen they had just eluded were persistent damn bastards, but they had gotten away thanks to the grace, charm, and clever wit of Yohji Kudou. But, whatever reaction or comment he had expected or hoped for wasn't there. Aya just glared back at him, his eyes narrowing the tiniest bit to indicate how displeased he was with the whole situation.

Aya took a deep breath, holding it in his lungs for a moment or two, and then letting it out slowly, on a long sigh. He closed his eyes and concentrated on the rise and fall of his shoulders, the feeling of his lungs expanding as they filled with air, the way they deflated as he breathed it back out again. He blocked out everything else, feeling nothing but the small movements of his body, hearing nothing but the beat of his own heart, the sound of his own breathing.

Again. And again. And again. Until, ever so slowly, he felt his restless spirit begin to calm and center within him.

"Look, Mister, it's the only one I have left. Take it or leave it," the shopkeeper announced.

He was careful to keep his tone flat, final, and matter-of-fact, indicating, in no uncertain terms, there would be no negotiation on this deal. This was it. He had the final say, and he wanted to be sure this customer, who stood almost a head taller than he did and had a rather foreboding air about him, knew that. Everyone in the store turned to stare at D as he paused in the doorway, silhouetted by the setting sun. The stares ranged from greedy excitement to downright distrust. Travelers were not usually welcome in frontier towns, especially this close to sunset, although most merchants made an exception in hopes of a few extra coins crossing their palms. The only thing more scarce out here than personal safety was money, and most folks were willing to sacrifice a bit of one in order to gain a little of the other.

Max Greene swallowed, hard, as he reached out and, once again, pushed the doorbell. He heard the bell's bongs echo away inside the massive structure before him, and he couldn't help but think that they sounded like the crack of doom, or the opening of Hell's gates, or something similar. The horror and mystery novels he loved to read were always talking about doorbells sounding like that, but he hadn't ever given much thought to exactly how it would feel to hear that sound. Really, he had just glossed over the words as empty, meaningless description, ignoring them in his haste to get to the next bit of action. They had meant nothing to him, other than a bunch of "blah-blah-blah" keeping him from the good parts of the story.

(a writing challenge response for Touga / Crabgrass)

It was a beautiful spring day -- almost no wind, not a cloud in the sky, and the sunlight had a gentle quality to it that … well, if you were a sentimental sort of person, it might even bring tears to your eyes.

Touga Kiryu was not plagued with sentimentality. He wasn't a bad person, but he wasn't exactly a "good" person, either. He had always liked to think of himself as being one of the few complex individuals in a rather simple world. Sometimes, even he did not know why he did the things that he did. Often, his actions made little sense, unless you looked at them from a purely selfish standpoint. This had made most people write him off as nothing more than a snobbish fop of a playboy, who was out to gratify his own carnal desires and needs, no matter the cost to himself or those around him. Of course, dismissing him so easily was a mistake. Touga knew this. He could have shown it daily in a million different ways, could have proven his naysayers and detractors all wrong. But, he chose to play along. It was easier to pretend and let people think what they would, and, besides, Touga had found people tended to let their guard down around a foppish playboy. This had served him well in the past, and, he figured, it would serve him well in the future. A bad person, he wasn't. A good person … well, not so much, either. But, ruthless. Yes, Touga Kiryu was ruthless to a fault.

Night

(a wk fanfiction by tex-chan)

It's my favorite kind of night. The air is crisp and cool, with a little bit of a bite to it. It's been so freaking hot lately, but today was the first day that really felt like fall. I love that -- the first moment when you can feel the seasons shift around you. It always seems like summer will never end, like it'll just get longer and hotter, until everything in the city melts together -- sidewalks, storefronts, people, everything -- to run down into the sewers, all the colors and textures of life blending into one big blur. Like when you wash paint down a drain and the colors swirl together before they disappear. But, then, just when you think you can't take it any more … just when you think you're going to go bat-shit crazy from all the heat, and the sweat, and the humidity … fall breezes in. That's the way I always think about it -- a season that breezes its way into your life. I don't know why, though. Maybe because that's the way I always realize it's here -- when I feel that first, clear, crisp breeze against my face. Or, maybe because I like listening to the leaves rustle in the wind. Maybe there's no good reason for it. Hell if I know. Hell if I care, either. Just, one day, you're sitting there, sweating your ass off, and, the next, it's like the world has heaved a huge sigh of relief. And, boom, fall is there. It always feels like a surprise to me, but that shift in the weather, that first hint of the nip in the air, makes me feel like change is just around the corner, like anything is possible, even for a used-up, jaded old man like me.

"I feel pretty. Oh so pretty!"

Howl's voice came from Sophie's room. It rose and fell, following the melody of a tune only he could hear. Echoing off of the hard surfaces in the main room, the words seemed to float from the pans hanging on the wall above the stove, to the hollow of the chimney just above Calcifer's head, and then back again to where they had started, almost like the clear, clean tones of a bell.

Couch Potato

(a writing challenge response for Yohji / Nature)

Yohji stretched as he made his way down the stairs, toward the living room. This was going to be a good day; he could already tell. The shop was closed, freeing him from the necessary evil of his "day job". Score one point for today. For once, the apartment had been quiet, and no one had asked him to do anything that morning, which meant he had been able to sleep in until what he considered a decent hour. He checked his watch. Yep -- noon, when the day should start, in Yohji's opinion. Getting up any earlier was barbaric and wrong, on so many levels. Score two points for today. In a moment of stupid, guilt-induced weakness earlier in the week, he had agreed to help Ken this afternoon -- something about an extra soccer practice for his little league team and needing someone to chauffer kids and pick up drinks and snacks. Yohji had no idea why he had offered to help; maybe he had been drunk at the time. Whatever the reason for his unexpected largesse, he had been dreading it all week. Two hours spent outside, watching a bunch of kids run around like maniacs -- not Yohji Kudou's idea of a good time. Lady Luck was watching over him, though; the day had dawned gray and rainy. He knew Ken would have to cancel practice. Oh yeah, score one more point for today. Add it all up, and you had one bang-up, damn fine day on your hands. Maybe, even one for the record books.

Secret Santa

(a wk christmas fic by tex-chan. christmas, 2006)

Yohji was not a happy camper. He paced around the kitchen over the Koneko -- from the doorway between this room and the living room to the outside door, where he paused to stare at the murky-dark night just beyond the apartment's steps. He cupped his hand around his face and leaned his forehead against the glass to see past his own reflection. But, it did no good. The steps, alley, and parking area behind the flower shop were full of empty, black night -- just like the past ten or twenty times he had looked. He sighed in frustration and flicked some ashes from the end of his cigarette into the nearby trash can before continuing his rounds -- over to the table in the middle of the kitchen, where he pretended to paw through the junk mail sitting next to the bowl of fruit. He flipped through the stack of letters twice without noticing what any of them said, before tossing them back down. They landed with the muffled smack of coupon-heavy envelopes striking old wood, and Yohji continued on his way -- to the kitchen sink, where he leaned, braced up on his outstretched arms, against the counter and stared at his reflection in the window. He had to admit, he looked like hell -- mussed hair that had come loose from his low ponytail to curl around his face; ghost-white skin -- a stark contrast to the dark-colored t-shirt he wore; and, worst of all, the look of quiet desperation so plainly visible in his eyes, even behind the dark lenses of his ever-present sunglasses. Yohji watched the smoke from his cigarette curl around his head for a few moments before frowning at his reflection and tossing the spent butt into the garbage disposal. Reflection-Yohji frowned back at him, and he turned away from the window, lighting a fresh cig as he paced past the stove and arrived back at the doorway between the kitchen and living room. And, thus, another circuit began.

Rain

(a wk fanfic challenge response by tex-chan)

Aya stood at the edge of the Koneko's roof, looking down at the alleyway behind the flower shop. The sky was cloudy and the air was heavy with the promise of rain. Aya could smell it -- that fresh, sweet scent of the coming downpour. It was one of those smells that seemed to crawl right into his head, until he could taste it on the back of his tongue, a smell he always associated with better times, a smell he associated with innocence and purity. Maybe because it seemed as if the rain could wash everything clean and give a fresh start to the world it touched. He wondered if it might wash him clean, too, if he just stayed out in it long enough.

Nagi sighed as he stared out the window. He leaned his head against the cold glass and let the warmth of his breath create a moist, misty fog, while he gazed at the snow-covered park across the street. It had been snowing nonstop for three days, and the sky outside was gray and cloudy, promising no break in the winter weather. The fluffy flakes continued to march down from the sky, like tiny sentries, obliterating everything in their path and covering the whole world with a blanket of icy white. The world looked cold, and Nagi shivered a little as the chill from the window's glass seeped through the warmth of his skin.

White Hunters Never Die

(a writing challenge response for Yohji / Vitamins)

Yohji groaned as he rolled over and turned off his alarm clock. He lay on his back for a few moments, staring at the ceiling and thinking about how much he wanted a cigarette as he took stock of the aches and pains running through his body. Maybe it was his imagination, but there seemed to be a lot more of them than he was used to. He felt old wounds aching, right down to his bones, as well as the throbbing of a few newer bruises. His muscles felt tight and sore, as if they had been pulled too taught and, then, shoved back into their proper places. All in all, he couldn't find one thing on his body that didn't ache or throb, and his mind told him, in no uncertain terms, it was going to take quite a bit of time to get moving tonight.

Endgame: Part 1

"Just keep going. Keep moving. One foot in front of the other," Yohji panted, shifting around so that Aya's weight rested against him a bit more.

Aya didn't say anything, and it occurred to Yohji that he hadn't said anything for some time now. Yohji hadn't noticed; he had been too busy trying to elude the guards that had ambushed them. Now, though, he felt a pang of fear stab through his heart and into his gut. Aya had been in the lead when they had entered that room in search of their target, which meant he had walked head-first into the ambush. Which meant his body had shielded Yohji from the attack. Yohji figured he should have felt lucky. After all, he had escaped without a scratch. But how could he, when his good fortune came at such a high price?

His initial assessment of the maintenance closet had been correct, Yohji noted grimly as he entered the small space, dragging Aya along with him. It wasn't easy to find a halfway comfortable way to sit while still hanging on to Aya, but Aya had become so weak that he couldn't stand on his own. Yohji couldn't have let go of him, even if he had wanted to. It didn't matter, though, because the last thing Yohji wanted to do right now was let Aya go. He pulled Aya close to him and shifted around -- stubborn, refusing to give up until they were both settled as comfortably as possible. He ended up leaning against the wall closest to the access door, with Aya sitting between his outstretched legs and the younger man's torso cradled to his chest in a gentle embrace. The little closet was just wide enough so that he could stretch his legs out in front of him, but his feet banged against the opposite wall. Once they were settled, Yohji reached over and closed the door, plunging the little space into darkness.

Endgame: Part 3

Later on, Yohji would wonder what had reached him, but he would never know if it was Omi's voice or the scream that finally managed to break through. He opened his eyes to find himself staring, not at four metal walls in a tiny, claustrophobia-inducing room, but at a ceiling. He recognized the plaster, which had faded to a dirty, off-white color over the years, and he recognized the cracks that spider webbed across his line of vision. His ceiling. In his room. Over the Koneko.

Endgame: Part 4

Yohji paused in the kitchen doorway and felt relieved beyond measure as he stared at Aya's back. The younger man was standing in front of the open refrigerator, and, although Yohji couldn't see his face, he imagined Aya giving the brightly-lit interior an irritated-looking frown. Yohji smiled as Aya cursed under his breath and bent over to look inside the fridge. He couldn't remember the last time he had been this happy to see someone.

I Love You NOT!

(an un-Valentine's Day fanfiction in four parts)

Part 1

It had been an awful day. No, "awful" didn't even come close to describing it, Aya decided, as he swept up the last few fallen rose petals strewn across the Koneko's floor. He whisked them into a dustpan and, with a weary-sounding sigh, dumped them into the nearby trash can -- a gray, rubber monstrosity he had been dragging around the shop as he cleaned up. This had become a routine task now, but, as he straightened up the disorder and cleared away the trash caused by a busy day in the flower shop, Aya couldn't help but remember when he had first joined Weiss. Compared to the whole "hunter of the night" assassin thing, he had figured the flower shop gig would be a cakewalk. He hadn't expressed it openly, of course. That wasn't his way. Even now, he preferred to keep his emotions and feelings hidden as much as he could, and it had been even more like that when he had first arrived, before he had come to know and trust the other members of the team. Even so, he remembered he had been smug and self-assured, certain being a florist would be one of the easiest jobs he had ever held, and resentful of how lame and stupid Weiss's cover was.

Part 2

Yohji paused at the bottom of the stairs leading from their living area above the Koneko into the shop's back room. He frowned as he watched Aya, who stood at the sink with his back to the stairwell, and he couldn't help feeling a bit surprised when Aya didn't turn around to face him. Usually, Aya had a sixth sense about being watched. Yohji had always found it a bit creepy and more than a little irritating, but it had saved their butts on missions more than once, so he had come to value Aya's uncanny ability. Now, though, Aya leaned on the sink and seemed engrossed in watching the dirty mop water swirl down the drain, taking no notice of Yohji's presence.

I Love You NOT!

(an un-Valentine's Day fanfiction in four parts)

Part 3

Someone was in his room. They hadn't made any noise, but the sensation of another presence, the feeling that something was "not right" nagged at Aya. It worked its way into his subconscious until, finally, it penetrated the foggy haze of his exhaustion and pulled him out of the deep sleep into which he had fallen. Even so, he didn't wake up. Not right away. On any normal night, the feeling of an uninvited presence this close to him would have jolted him into instant wakefulness, no matter how soundly he had been sleeping. But, tonight was not a normal night. It had been a long day. Aya was exhausted. He was in a bad mood. And all he wanted to do was catch a decent night's sleep. It was comfortable there, in the blackness of slumber. Peaceful. He didn't have to know anything. He didn't have to feel anything. He didn't have to think anything. And he wanted to stay there, so much so that he allowed the peace to lull his mind into a haze of apathy that dulled his senses. Somewhere, deep down inside, his mind screamed at him that someone was there. Someone was in his room. Someone had gotten this close to him at a time when he was vulnerable. It wasn't safe. But, Aya had little trouble ignoring that part of his psyche. So, someone was in the room. Big deal. Tonight, he figured, they could have him. If they killed him, it would save him from another day in the flower shop. If he had been awake, Aya might have found that thought amusing. Instead, it barely registered in his mind before he drifted back to sleep.

Part 4

Aya woke up screaming. He bolted upright in bed and sat there, cradling his head in the palms of his hands and struggling to bring his breathing back under control. He looked around the room, almost afraid of what he would find, and sighed in relief when he realized it had been a dream. Just a dream, nothing more. Aya's skin was slick with sweat, and, now that he had managed to bring his panic reflex under control, he realized he was cold. He had gone to bed with his window open a crack, and he shivered as the chilly night air hit his wet skin. He pulled the sheets closer and tried to push the dream out of his mind.

Night Light

(a writing challenge response for Armstrong / Vampire)

"I'm just saying, Colonel. I think everyone would benefit from this," Major Alex Louis Armstrong stated.

Colonel Roy Mustang, head of Eastern Command, lay on his bed and stared up through the darkness above him. He shifted around so that he could lie with his hands behind his head, and, slowly, counted to ten under his breath.

This trip had been a disaster from the beginning, and Roy was in a bad mood. A very bad mood.

He hadn't wanted to come here, but Central had insisted it was a mission that required his personal attention. Which was why he was stuck in this Podunk hotel, in this dust ball of a town located somewhere between Nowhere and Nothing, instead of back at home, in his own, warm, comfortable bed.

Grocery List

(a wk fanfiction by tex-chan)

"Why the hell didn't you take care of this before we left tonight?" Aya asked, barely managing to conceal the whine behind his words.

He frowned at his partner and, bracing himself against the building behind him, slid down so that he was sitting on the sidewalk. He stifled a groan as he felt the cold wet of the sidewalk through the seat of his pants and the scrape of hard concrete bricks through the back of his trench coat. Leather and concrete didn't mix - a life lesson he had learned through years of hard experience - and he hated to think what he was doing to the coat's back. It was a good bet he was scratching it all to hell and then some, but Aya figured that wasn't such a big deal - not after what the coat had already been through tonight. He fingered a tear in the shoulder, where a bullet had passed through the material, barely missing the flesh and bone beneath. It shouldn't be much of a problem for the leather workers to take care of a few scrapes at the same time they fixed the rest of the coat. Aya had no idea who Kritiker hired to do the work, but he couldn't help thinking whoever it was must have made a fortune off of them, already. Aya was surprised to find that the thought bothered him, just a little. It shouldn't have. He loved this coat, and it usually needed repair after one of Weiss's "outings". Still, the whole idea of it left a bad taste in his mouth - like some stranger was profiting off of him and his sins, but never getting their own hands dirty.
