Running on Empty ...
Which sounds rather depressing, doesn't it? I don't feel I'm particularly depressed. Or particularly anything. Except tired.
Hubby is out of town for his grandfather's funeral. The funeral and cremation were today. I think the interment will be on Monday. He's scheduled to come home on Monday, simply because that was the first chance he could get a non-stop flight. I'm totally selfish, but I really wish he was coming home tomorrow. I miss him, and I hate it when he's out of town.
Yesterday (Friday) was the day of super rain. I don't mean super in a good way, either. Sheets and sheets of water pouring from the sky. Flooded streets. Wind. Lightning. Thunder. Gah. I hate storms like that. I especially hate driving in them, and I inadvertently got caught out in this string of storms twice. Once when I had to go pick my daughter up from school. Nothing to be done about that. School is out at 3:40, and I have to be there. No question about it. The second time, though, was when kiddo and I went to eat at one of her favorite haunts. I waited until I thought the storms had passed through. When we set out for the restaurant, it wasn't raining at all. While we were eating, another wave of storms came through, and these sat around for a bit. So I had to drive home in them. Thankfully, it wasn't a long drive, as this was a local eatery. Still, I was a nervous wreck. I've been caught out on the IH-10 corridor between San Antonio and Houston during several Texas Frog Choker storms, and I'm absolutely terrified of being out on the road in this weather. The Texas storms were worse than what we had yesterday. In them, I could not see even the front of my car. I could not see well enough to know if I was still on the road or not ... but also couldn't see well enough to pull over and get off the road. And the stupid semis were still on the highway. There was so much water on the road that, when they passed me, their wake would wash completely over the top of my car. Needless to say, I now have a phobia of having to drive in stormy weather.
It turned out OK. Kiddo and I made it home all right. All in one piece. My nerves were quite a bit frazzled, but I managed to recover, thanks to some "chocolate therapy". Heh. And kiddo had a good time. When she found out it would be us girls only this weekend, she specifically asked to eat at that place, as well as visit the bakery next door to it -- this fantastic, European-style bakery. Everything they make is pure heaven. I've never had anything bad from there. So, so yummy. *drools*
I watched Music & Lyrics last night, which greatly helped my state of mind, too. Tonight, as soon as I finish writing this (rather spastic) LJ entry, I'm going to watch Notting Hill. I tend to hit at least my three favorite "feel good" movies when hubby is out of town. ^.~
Today, we headed out a bit before 11 AM. Kiddo wanted to eat at Applebee's (another favorite of hers), and we needed to go to a local toy store to get a birthday present for one of her school friends. The party was tonight. Normally, I would have done a Target run for the gift during the week, but Ong's (grandfather) passing kind of threw everything out of whack in a big way. There was a lot to do before hubby went out of town. This worked out well, though, as kiddo loves this particular store. So she got to go with me and browse for a good while.
Tonight, we went to the party. It was at this place called The Little Gym. I had never been there before, and neither had kiddo. It's not super far from our house, but it is kind of a drive. Plus, I had only driven there once on my own. Needless to say, I was nervous about it. I'm weird like that about driving. >.O Thankfully, the weather was fantastic today. It was hot and a bit humid, but gorgeously sunny. Not a cloud in the sky. I'm so glad, as I would not have been able to drive over there in stormy weather like we had on Friday. And kiddo was so looking forward to the party. She had been talking about it all week; she would have been crushed if we had had to skip it. The party was from 6:30 to 8. Kind of an odd time for a little kid party, but it was great. All the kids had a fantastic time, and my kiddo was no exception. I came away from it with a major headache from all the screaming. And a healthy dose of thankfulness for having only one child. But, what can you expect? That many little kids in one small space is just asking for headache vibes. (lol) I was also nervous about driving back, as I wasn't sure I could find my way home in the dark. I basically knew how to get home, but things look so different to me in the dark. That worked out OK, too, though, as it wasn't quite dark for the drive back. The sun was setting, so I could still see all the way home. Now that the party thing is over, I kind of feel like we managed to "ace" the weekend, in a way -- even though there is one day left. Still, the party was definitely the "big thing" this weekend.
Went shopping at a Plow & Hearth near the party location. I love going into that store. So many neat things. I broke down and bought a set of Moroccan bell wind chimes. They had such a pretty sound. I'm a total sucker for wind chimes, anyhow. Now, I'm trying to decide what to do with them. Do I hang them here in the office where they will catch the breeze from the a/c vent and/or ceiling fan? Or do I wait till the yard is done and hang them out there? Decisions, decisions.
After we got home, we watched Howl's Moving Castle. Another kiddo request. She wanted to watch a movie together, and she loves that one. I have to admit I really love it, too. I was enchanted the first time I saw it. Having now seen it, literally, hundreds of times, I can honestly say it drags a bit toward the end. But I still adore it. It's definitely up there in my faves list for Ghibli films. Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and My Neighbor Totoro. I love My Neighbor Totoro. ♥
Tomorrow is the grocery store (whee -- NOT), eating at McDonald's at some point (yes, another kiddo request), and, hopefully, cleaning up the yard a bit and doing some trimming on my rosebushes. They really got beaten up in the storms. And they had been looking so pretty, too. Poo. =(
